Guitar Fretboard

Guitar fretboards are the part of the instrument where notes and chord are made. We'll look at some of the more common sizes and fret configurations.

Normally there are twenty per fretboard. The frets are not evenly space this due to the calibration of instrument.

Space between frets is at it's max closest to where the strings are tuned. As you procede down the neck toward the bridge the frets become smaller.

Usually the fretboard is composed of two octaves. Where the 12th fret starts the next higher octave, the notes are the same as those of the open strings.

Most fretboards are marked with fret markers. Fret markers are usually placed at the 1st,3rd, 5th, 7th, 9th, 12th, 15, 17, 19th. This is normal placement, not all instruments have them all.

Fret markers assist in recognition of chord and scale positions. This is a great aid in recognizing scale and chord scales. There will be more discussion on this in later lessons.
